When students at Ghent University want to ask for reasonable accomodations, they first have to apply for a special status. They can ask for advice at the support office which will help them to gather the neccessary attestations. The application is send to a seperate central office which grants the status and registers this in the students database without revealing why the student has this status to other staff. Registration of number of students with a special status is communicated with the flemish department of education to monitor the number of students and grant the higher education institutions working budget to provide the support.

A student receiving the special status contacts the point of contact for students with a disability, to 'translate' the status in reasonable accomodations. This can be different according to the course, and according to the kind of barriers they have to surpass. 

application forms are available on the university website according to the subgroup: motoric, visual, auditory, learning, psychiatric impairness, chronical illness, multiple impairment or other.

reasonable accomodations are divided into accomodations to study and for evaluations. The support office start from a list of possible accomodations build upon expertise in previous situations. But as no situation and no person is th same it is also possible to ask for other aspects if they are reasonable. 

For some faculties the accomodations are send by mail by the office to the academic staff, for other faculties it is available in a database system. It is in the students best interest he takes the initiative to contact the teaching staff and communicates about the practical approach of the accomodation.
