Description of the tool: |
At public students dormitories in Bologna (i.e. managed by the regional agency ERGO) are organized groups of volunteers willing to support disabled students staying in the same dormitory. They are usually groups of 2 to 5 persons (according to the tasks required) assigned to one or more students with special needs. They support her/him in every day practical tasks like cooking, grocery shopping, going around within and outside the dormitory; moreover, they play a fundamental role in favouring the student's socialization within and outside the dormitory too. They are not employed in tasks requiring a specific professional expertise, such as student's personal care (having shower, therapies, etc.). Volunteers benefit of a symbolic reduction (40 euros less) on their boarding coasts and on the other side, they are having a life experience which somehow and in some measure makes them "messengers" of social inclusion in the all dormitory and potentially, for the all society. |

The tool should be locally evaluated and structured according to the local configurations and settings. A basic training on disability, inclusion and special needs may be suitable to deliver to volunteers at the very beginning of their activities. What is fundamental is to not charge volunteers with tasks requiring specialized competencies and professionals (e.g. personal hygiene, medical therapies, others) Coherently with the logic of network (see related voice in the toolbox), an open channel of communication between disabled students, the volunteers, their responsible and the professionals of the University's Office for disabled students should be ensured. |
